The Buckley Foundation for Communications, a 501(c)(3) charity, has launched a campaign to build and sustain The Buckley Institute forCivil Discourse. This is a crucial step toward fulfilling the Foundation mission “to keep America in the first rank by disciplined thinking, clear writing and eloquent speech."
More than a mere location - it is a destination - the Institute will be the home of the Foundation and a venue for hosting:
Debates. The Buckley family has been the epitome of gracious forensic encounter for decades. The highlight of the Disciplined Thinking Seminar hosted by the Buckley School for Public Speaking is a public debate. Firing Line hosted debates more than a few times during its storied history. A well-run debate allows an audience to compare and contrast two sides of an issue and it is conducted with civility and dignity. Presently, what is passed off as a “debate” by the media is more akin to a mud-wrestling cage match.
The Buckley Foundation for Communications will elevate our national dialogue by hosting debates on issues of national importance at the Buckley Institute for Civil Discourse and then providing the video and audio via broadcast/cable, podcast, or vodcast.
Seminars and Colloquia. There are many institutions that offer seminars and colloquia – all universities do so. Topical presentations, problem solving sessions, and wide-ranging discussions of matters of importance should be conducted in a setting conducive to thought and clear expression. Universities, the Aspen Institute, and others most often conduct such seminars and colloquia from a perspective that diverges from the conservatism. The Buckley Foundation for Communications will partner with like-minded institutions to create an intellectual counter-weight to the prevailing academic and institutional bias.
